Ex- international Super Eagles player and Tunisia1994AFCON victorious member, 1996 Atlanta Olympics football Gold medalist winning U-23 Eagles squad, Daniel Amokachi has slamed on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) because of the body’s often much laying emphasis on coaching thereby leaving what he describes as the nitty-gritty or real problem confronting or afflicting the nation’s flagship football team, Super Eagles.
The former flamboyant massive attacker pointed out such deadly defects would continue to hinder the steady progress of the Eagles in future as the NFF continues to go round the circle or focuses on coaching which amount to starting off building the house from the roof top instead of beginning from the foundation/ basement, Amokachi warned.
According to him, after the failure of Austin Eguaveon’s led technical crew to qualify Nigeria for Qatar 2022 World Cup, the apex football governing body is on the march again in deep search for a foreign coach which its technical and Development committee had commended and even unconfirmed reports have it, the Portuguese Jose Peseiro who is said not to have a solid coaching clout is likely to clinch the top job.
“Let me make it clearer that the same process is like building from the roof top which has led us to nowhere. After the hue and cry of AFCON and Qatar World Cup losses one thought NFF would go back to the drawing board but sadly no, rather a foreign hand is being engaged and there we go again, he told reporters during an interview”.
He asked if the country can even boast of a weak or solid developmental programme for our younger ones. He emphatically said that he was a product of Nigerian League which threw him and many of others up to first national lime light and then international hence most of them the products of the local league were spotted and invited to the national team.
The former Everton of England player asked the NFF leadership to stop this half measures and chart a brand new course for the country’s football for the first time after that Clemens Westerhof’s golden era in the Super Eagles which was greatly part and parcel of Nigeria’s Atlanta 1996 Olympics football gold medal squad instead of this way and manner it has been directing the game in country, Amokachi lamented.
