AC Milan chief executive Ivan Gazidis has hinted at his frustration over Franck Kessie’s contract impasse at the club.
The Ivorian midfielder, who has established himself as a key player for the Rossoneri under manager Stefano Pioli, is set to become a free agent at the end of the current season when his contract with the club expires.
Already the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid have been linked with the 24-year-old, who can be signed for free from midway through 2022.
Should Kessie run down his contract at Milan, he will be following in the footsteps of Hakan Calhonoglu and Gianluigi Donnarumma, who left the Rossoneri under the same circumstances in mid-2021 for Internazionale and Paris Saint-Germain respectively.
Gazidis believes this new trend of free agency is bad for clubs, especially after the financial blows dealt by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Decisions are never easy. In the past, players didn’t push to leave as free agents,” said Gazidis, as quoted by Tribal Football.
“Instead, today the clubs operate in a more responsible fashion on a financial level, whereas players and agents act as if Covid never happened.
“Some players have to leave as free agents for the figures they are requesting. We will continue to make decisions in the best interests of the club, remaining competitive at the top in Serie A and Europe, but we cannot ignore economic sustainability.
“I think we might’ve made mistakes, but all decisions were made for the good of the club.”
Milan, meanwhile, continue to perform strongly in Serie A and will be back in action on Sunday 31 October with a match away to Roma. (African Football)
