Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly has disclosed that he could not sleep for two days after he was hurt by racist abuse during a match against ACF Fiorentina. The 30-year-old defender stated that he was racially abused by a section of fans during an Italian Serie A match which his side, SSC Napoli won 2-1 against Fiorentina on October 3. Koulibaly approached the fans immediately after the game and Fiorentina apologized for the incident which took place at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in the Italian city of Florence. The world-class centre back has now opened up the event and he urged the people to battle against racism. “These are episodes that hurt. After Florence, I didn’t sleep for two days,” Koulibaly told the club’s website. “The battle against racism must involve the whole world, I personally have been carrying it out for some time. “I would like to meet these people to talk and understand why these offences.” Koulibaly was born in France to Senegalese parents and he was eligible to represent both nations at international level, and initially played for the France national under-20 football team. He later made his senior debut with Senegal in 2015 and he has since 51 international matches for the Lions of Teranga. (African Football) •PHOTO: Khalidou Koulibaly
