Gabby Agbonlahor thinks Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo should be fined and suspended after he was filmed hitting a phone out of an Everton fan’s hand.
Merseyside Police is appealing for witnesses after footage on social media emerged which appeared to show the Portuguese smashing a phone out of a young Toffees fan’s hand and onto the ground as he limped off towards the tunnel following United’s 1-0 loss at Goodison Park.
Ronaldo later issued an apology for his “outburst” via social media and invited the supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford “as a sign of fair-play and sportsmanship”.
Ronaldo said: “It’s never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing.
“Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set the example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game.
“I would like to apologise for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair-play and sportsmanship.”
Instead of offering to take him to Old Trafford, former Premier League striker Agbonlahor thinks Ronaldo should’ve offered to buy the young Everton fan “a new phone and try and get him Everton tickets” while he has called for the Manchester United striker to be banned.
“If it was any other player this would have been a bigger story and a bigger problem, Ronaldo feels like he can do whatever he wants,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider.
“He’s offered to bring the young boy to a Man United game but that’s a punishment at the moment. Why would an Everton fan go to watch Man United play?
“He should be buying him a new phone and try and get him Everton tickets. It’s shocking from Ronaldo. Don’t take out your poor performance on a young fan.
“It’s very poor and he should be punished. The club won’t punish him, he could come in six hours late and they wouldn’t do anything. What needs to happen is the FA needs to fine him and give him a suspension.
“He needs to know you can’t do whatever you want. Yes, you’re one of the best players to ever play the game but that doesn’t give you a licence to do whatever you like.”
