Legendary Nigerian striker Victor Ikpeba has urged Belgium international Romelu Lukaku to remain with Inter Milan.
Lukaku, who has Congolese origins, has been heavily linked with his former English club, Chelsea FC after playing an important role in helping Inter clinch the 2020/21 Italian Serie A title.
The 28-year-old marksman finished the season with 24 league goals, making him the highest scorer on the title-winning team and the second-highest scorer in the league, behind Cristiano Ronaldo of Juventus.
Ikpeba, who played for top German club Borussia Dortmund during his playing days, believes Lukaku would be making a bad decision if he returned to Chelsea.
“I have my reservations, Lukaku has done well with Inter Milan, why not stick with Inter Milan, he’s getting used to Italian football,” Ikpeba said on Goal.
“Coming back to Chelsea we all know how strikers do labour to score goals in Chelsea, especially the manner they play.
“If he doesn’t get the ball often, the crosses, I am worried about Lukaku returning if he comes back to Chelsea. Is he coming because of money? Sometimes we have to look at those areas.”
Lukaku spent two seasons with his last English club, Manchester United, before his relationship with the club deteriorated as he failed to return for pre-season training, was fined, and subsequently signed for Inter in August 2019, for a reported club-record €80 million.
“He has been outstanding since he left Manchester United to Inter Milan, they just won the Serie A which is great for him and he just lost his manager, Conte who has left the club,” he added.
“There’s a lot of speculation but if he really wants to do what players want to do, go out there and be successful with another club, why not? But it’s going to be a massive challenge for Lukaku.”
Ikpeba also played for AS Monaco where he won the French Ligue 1 title and Trophée des Champions which saw him being named 1997 CAF African Footballer of the Year. (African Football)
