Copa Lagos: Switzerland humiliate Nigeria 8-3 at Eko Atlantic City

Switzerland have emerged champions of the 2016 Copa Lagos Beach Soccer Tournament after beating Nigeria 8-3 at the Eko Atlantic City, Lagos on Sunday.

The competition, which served as a preparation for the Super Sand Eagles ahead of the Lagos 2016 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations, also featured the club challenge, which Pepsi Football Academy won, and the celebrity match, which was won by ex-football stars against entertainers.

Switzerland, who are the European beach soccer champions, took the lead late in the first period through coach and captain, Angelo Schirinzi, who shot past goalkeeper Godwin Ayalogu in the Nigerian goal. The Sand Eagles equalised with a minute left on the clock through Abu Azeez. Emeka Ogbonna gave Nigeria the lead for the first time in the game with seconds left in the first period after shooting home from a free kick.

In the second period, Noel Ott scored with a bicycle kick but Azeez levelled the scores immediately with a shot from the centre half. Switzerland however extended their lead with two goals in the dying seconds of the period and continued the rout in the last period of the game to finish 8-3 against the hosts.

Nigeria coach, Audu Adamu, said the team would correct their mistakes from the game in time for their first match in the Beach Soccer AFCON, which begins on Tuesday.

“We lost to a better side but we have learnt a lot from today’s match which we will work on before the match against Egypt,” he said.

“They are the European champions and have more experience than we have but it is a challenge for us since we began camping for the Nations Cup.” (NAN)
