Laliga: Griezmann Ensures Barca Finish Third

Antoine Griezmann scored an acrobatic late winner as Barcelona sealed third place in La Liga with victory at Eibar.

The French forward fired in from a tight angle at the back post following good work from Ousmane Dembele down the right-hand side.

It was a much-changed Barca, missing a number of key players including Lionel Messi, who had been given permission to rest before the Copa America.

They finish the season on 79 points, seven behind champions Atletico Madrid.

“We didn’t do the business in important games this season,” said Griezmann, who join Barca from Atletico in 2019.

“Of course I’m happy with the goal but still disappointed with how the league campaign has gone. We weren’t good at the start of the campaign but we’ve been almost perfect in 2021.

“I’m happy for Atletico, for [coach] Diego Simeone, Koke, for my friends there and their fans. They deserve it.”

As well as Messi, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet, Jordi Alba and Pedri were all absent for Barcelona, and initially it showed in a somewhat disjointed first half, though it picked up in the second half, culminating in Griezmann’s fine strike.

Eibar’s relegation had already been confirmed before the game and they finish bottom of the table on 30 points, returning to the second tier after seven years in Spain’s top flight. (BBC)
