Yakubu: Everton Beating Liverpool Was Like Winning The League

By Daily sports on March 3, 2021

Legendary Nigerian striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni says Everton FC’s win over Liverpool FC last month was like winning the English Premier League title.

Better known as Yakubu, who spent four years with Everton during his playing days, watched as his former club claimed a historic 2-0 win over Liverpool in a league game on February 20.

Goals from Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson inspired Everton to their first-ever win over Liverpool at the Anfield Stadium since 1999.

“We’ve been waiting for so long to win at Anfield, it has not been easy,” Yakubu told Goal.

“The last time we defeated them was at Goodison Park in 2010 when Mikel Arteta scored; I still remember I played in [that game].

“I got messages from my friends even on Instagram, everyone was buzzing – it was like we won the league,” he added.

“It was a great feeling when you play for Everton for so long, once you are Blue, you’re always a Blue. So, I still support, I still check their results.”

Yakubu was transferred to Everton from fellow English club Middlesborough in August 2007 for a fee of £11.25 million on a five-year contract, which was at the time the most the club had ever paid for a player.

The Benin City-born legend appeared in over 250 Premier League matches for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, and Blackburn Rovers.

He is the third-highest African goalscorer in Premier League history with 96 goals. (African Football)
