Nigeia pull out of Toulun tournament

By Daily Sports on April 26, 2016

Nigeria U23 team will play no part in the 2016 Toulon football competition due to financial restraints.

The annual tourney in France would have afforded coach Samson Siasia the opportunity to test his boys ahead the Rio Olympics where they are zoned in Group B against Japan, Colombia and Sweden.

"I don't think our national Under-23 team will be participating in the Toulon tournament as earlier planned because of obvious reason of lack of funds," NFF’s Chris Green told Completesports.

"We wanted the U-23s to play the tournament which will also see some other Olympic Games bound teams in action but circumstances denied us.

"We shall look for quality friendly games for the team and hopefully there will be funds then to prepare the team.

“The target is an Olympic gold medal and the NFF will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the boys deliver in Rio,” he concluded.

With this development, South Africa will be the only African nation featuring at the 44th edition of the competition to hold between May 18-29, 2016. Japan, Mexico, England, Czech Republic, Portugal and Colombia have all confirmed their participation.

Nigeria last featured in the championship in 2013 where John Obuh’s Flying Eagles finished eight.
