The Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN) says it has selected 20 karatekas who will represent the country at the forthcoming 16th African Championships Junior/Senior Karate in Durban, South Africa.
The championship has been sheduled to take place from July 15 to July 17.
The federation’s President, Donatus Agu-Ejidike, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Lagos that the athletes were selected because of their readiness and exceptional performances.
NAN reports that the 10 female and 10 male athletes were selected at the National Championships/Coaching and Referees Course that took place from April 11 to April 16 in Delta.
Agu-Ejidike, also the Nigerian Pillar of Sports, appealed to corporate organisations to assist the federation to achieve its target of exposing athletes to continental and international tournaments.
“We just concluded the trials in Asaba on Friday and it was used to select those that will represent the country. It is not enough.
“We are appealing to corporate organizations to assist KFN to actualize the target of exposing our athletes.
“If we are able to get funds, we will attend the championships and do the country proud because the country is blessed with talents,”
He added that the karatekas would still continue to train ahead of the championships in July, to ensure a good outing.
The championships, originally scheduled for Libreville, Gabon in April, was shifted to Durban, South Africa due to logistics reasons. (tvcontinental.tv)
