By Victor Enyinnaya in Benin City on November 30, 2020

The remains of seasoned sports journalist, late Anthony Obaseki, was laid to rest in his compound in Benin Edo State Friday, October 27, amid large crowd of sympathisers, sports administrators, colleagues from different parts of the states and other friends.

It was a mixed grill as tears and wailing rented the atmosphere not leaving out testimonies from many of his gentleman’s life throughout his short stay on earth.

The ceremony, which was spiced with down pour which many said was blessing and sign of how he was, expressed shock on his death which they chorused only God can tell.

According one of his neighbours, Joseph Osagie, late Anthony Obaseki was a man of the people who does not have dull moments around as a result of his liberal life. He was loved by all and sundry and so prayed that his soul rest in perfect peace.

The setting was so lively as people that came around joined to ensure that everything went on peacefully.

A chat with his first son, Uyi Obaseki, revealed how fatherly and lovely he was to the family as he does not joke with their welfare adding that such things have been missing since his demise.

The 19- year old further informed that his father was recovering before the sad news of the unexpected came and prayed God to receive his kind soul. Uyi further described the father as one kind person that cannot have and let others around him go hungry; such life he stressed was his hallmark even at his sick bed.

He maintained that what his father always told him was to ensure he will be kind to people even those that obviously showed some signs of dislike to him that it is only that rewards people and won’t allow him to lack anything.

He emphatically declared that without much ado, the family would miss him for a very long time and appealed to his numerous friends to do ask after them from time to time. The lad who can cannot hold back tear each thanked all that answered them during the time he was sick that finally claimed his life and people that made it to here (Benin City) to give him their last respect.

It would be recalled that late Anthony Obaseki was a well known Sports Journalist of all times and had worked in many media houses topping it up as Public Relations Manager of El-Kanemi FC of Maiduguri where his sterling job was at its optimum.

He was survived by an aged mother, wife and children. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace and may perpetual light shine upon him. Amen
