Athletics Federation Crisis: How Sports Minister Sunday Dare Shot Himself On The Foot!

By Daily Sports on December 16, 2019

I’m by no means scandalised concerning the entire happenings in the polity because what is going on simply brings to the fore, the character of the dramatis personae, including the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari. Impunity remains the order of the day for this government. In sports, we see what is happening in the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the role of the Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, via impunity. After messing up the issue by taking sides, the Minister only reversed himself and went into dialogue which is still ongoing and as a matter of fact, Nigeria Olympic Committee (NO) stepped into the matter. That is what impunity does and it has become commonplace where government officials take laws into their hands after listening to unfounded rumours and sundry.

For the Yoruba nation, the hen is home to roost and let me add that in days to come more surprises will spring up because Buhari and his kinsmen are not done yet ‘to show these people some pepper’.

For The PUNCH newspapers to raise alarm over the happenings in the country came off the heels that the Ocean is fast swallowing her kingdom but the newspaper that used to be radical in all fronts has been in deep slumber because it has never directly affected her people.

It would be recalled that the Yoruba nation headlong supported the man that can never be trusted in keeping agreement of any kind all his life till date. Buhari and his kinsmen spearheaded by Mallam Nasir el-Rufai are showing the stuff they are made of and in days to come there would be more. Impunity is the middle name of Buhari and he has taken solace in the fact that his place is already in the refuse dump of history.

That is why he has turned blind eyes and deaf ears on the ones performed by his DSS and Adams Oshiomhole. Though DSS acted the script he (Buhari) wrote, also Nigerians saw how Oshionmole disregarded the order of IG of Police and held his rally to receive Osagie Ize-Iyamu whom Oshiomhole now preferred to use to oust Governor Obaseki come next Edo State Guber election.

Impunity galore by APC government. I don’t know if Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, with the prefix in his name (which I don’t know if it is a nickname) is a serious man of God. A man of God worth his calling would not behave the way he has conducted himself thus far.  I watched how both the shameless Iyamu and now his godfather, Oshiomhole displayed silly political miscalculations.

Iyamu is hungry for political power and wants to ride on the back of highly discredited Oshiomhole, who labelled him rogue, and dishonest person, a reason the former governor bluntly said was why he did not reappoint him after serving as his second term Director-General. It is ironic that the same Osagie Ize-Iyamu overnight became a saint to be trusted. Wonders they said shall never end.

I’m still at a loss why Governor Obaseki has covered the tracks of Adams Oshiomhole thus far. The earlier Governor Obaseki spills the beans on this overzealous short man devil, called Adams Oshiomhole, the better. To be honest with you, it is the fastest way to call his bluff. Expose Oshiomhole now, Governor Obaseki, otherwise he would be mischievous!

Watch out, readers, as we keenly monitor the Edo State politics from APC primaries to election proper and what Oshiomhole and Iyamu’s place would be.

Let me repeat here that I will never cry for Sowore or Orji Uzor Kalu because their pasts are now hurting them. Malami purportedly took over the case to see how far he will salvage the situation of the already battered image of Buhari.

For Orji, it must be clearer to him that up is no longer home for the squirrels. He is an architect of his current political state, and this will show him that harlotry never pays. I deliberately travelled this long road with you dear readers to vividly point out some wrong deaf and dumb actions and inactions of Buhari and his men and to put it mildly what has brought the country and her citizens to this shame. One would zero it in that on Sports, its Minister, Sunday Dare has plunged into darkness.

The crisis Sunday Dare and his bedfellows brought upon AFN ought to have been avoidable. Indeed, pundits and other athletics watchers are closely watching and monitoring where this will lead to.

How would the body weather that storm and come out together and stronger to work towards Olympics next year in Japan? Dare listened to wrong advice thereby shooting himself on the foot. He has shown partisanship so early in the day. It showed he had an agenda waiting to happen. Unfortunately, this is no government that calls its officials to order because of its directionless, otherwise, Dare would have been asked some questions by Buhari.

The reason for appointing and posting him to the Sports Ministry was to ensure and conclude the takeover of the national stadium by the Lagos State government. It remains one of the tall orders handed out to him which must logically be accomplished.

Dare’s move as we did discuss here last week was most uncivilised acting as if civilisation was still kicking him on the face. I did ask who his advisers were and why they must tell him to bring himself so low which further diminished him before the very few die-hard sports journalists, which yours sincerely in sports fell into. Shame left Dare to catch me. His mission to topple Gusau and his team failed flat. He begged them to come to the round table which would have been his first and most honourable step.

Again, the so-called athletics reporters that have constituted themselves as nuisance to man did Dare in.

As AFN boils because of who controls its soul, Power Lifting Federation is already at war with Dare’s Ministry and people like Tayo Oreyemen are talking tough as if the Ministry is their personal estate. I watched her last week Friday in an interview on Channels Television and further wept for the already lost country called Nigeria.

For the records, Tayo is one of the Federation Secretaries that ruined sports in the country. Incidentally, she is one of those calling the shots and misleading the ready gullible Dare.

Problems upon problems in sports you would say. If you like, it could be safely likened to the legendary ‘one week, one trouble.’ May God have mercy! Trust, this medium would, as usual, be on top of this anomaly by Sunday Dare and his cohorts. As Buhari is on the heels of his people, he, in turn, wants to do the same in AFN with Gusau and the men in his camp after being elected.

Impunity remains no solution to this lingering face-off. There should not be face saving at this juncture at all. Justice must be uppermost in this context, no more, no less. Insist on our social media handles as we keep shooting hard till next week!!
