Kelechi Nwakali: Leaving Arsenal The Right Call

By Daily sports on September 17, 2020

Nigerian attacking midfielder Kelechi Nwakali says that leaving Arsenal last year was a tough decision, but he believes he has justified his choice to join Huesca.

The 22-year-old, who was the Golden Ball winner at the 2015 U-17 World Cup, was on Arsenal’s books from 2016 to 2019, though he spent most of the time out on loan at MVV Maastricht, VVV Venlo and Porto B and did not make an official first-team appearance for the Gunners.

In September 2019 he signed a three-year contract with Spanish second-tier club Huesca, with the team going on to earn promotion to La Liga for the 2020-21 season.

Nwakali made his La Liga debut this past weekend, appearing as a substitute for Huesca in their 1-1 draw away to Villarreal on September 13.

“It was difficult for me to leave because they [Arsenal] wanted me to stay,” Nwakali told Tribalfootball.

“But at the same time, I needed to get a place where I can call my home, where I can continue to develop my game.”

The Nigerian continued, “What convinced me was after the club went to the second league. They had the main aim to gain promotion back, they never gave up the dream to come back to the highest league, the club was still fighting to come up and promotion was achieved.

“It was a dream come through and playing in La Liga will also help to develop my game and I think I’m justified with that choice to play for Huesca.”

Nwakali also believes that working with Huesca manager Michel has been of major benefit, with the tactician helping the youngster improve his game.

“I have a good relationship with the coach. He always talks to me after every training on where to improve and get better as a player,” the player explained.

“The position I play is comfortable for me. It shows more of my qualities and I really appreciate him for helping me to adjust to his own philosophy of football.” (African Football)
