The Edo Sports Festival Torch, having been lit up and commissioned by the Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki, to go round the 18 local governments of the state, entered Akoko-Edo on Wednesday as its first destination in Edo North. The Council Chairman, Hon. Don Umoru, was on ground to receive the torch before it later left for Agenibode and Fugar.

Receiving the torch and the government delegation led by the Edo State Sports Commission Chairman, Barr Godwin Dudu-Orumen, in Igarra, Umoru expressed delight and said they were honoured to be the first council to receive the torch of unity from Governor Obaseki.

“We are delighted to be the first set of people to receive the unity torch. We are not only number one on the alphabet list, but we are also number one in all aspects. We are multi-lingual people and it is most appropriate to be here first. We appreciate your coming and be assured of our cooperation and support before, during and after the event,” the Chairman said enthusiastically.

At Aghenebode, the headquarters of Etsako East Local Government Area, the Edo Games Unity Torch was received by the Council Chairman, Hon. Benedicta Ebuehi, who assured of the council’s support and readiness for the games.

She said: “We in Etsako East appreciate what our Government State Government is doing in developing sports and we want to use this medium to also assure His Excellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki, of our support and loyalty throughout. Sports remain a unifying factor and we are using the opportunity provided to harness the raw talents that abound in this area.”

At Etsako Central Local Government Area, the Council boss, Comrade John Ossi Akhigbe, gladly received the state sports festival team and the torch his best wishes. He boasted that his council would emerge winners of the forthcoming state sports festival.
