The 11th Edition of Pa Michael Imoudu Memorial Football Tournament will hold from October 18-25, 2019 at Sabongida Ora, the administrative headquarters of Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
The under-19 male and female football carnival will have in attendance teams from the 18 local government areas of Edo State. Also to feature are teams from other parts of the South South zone of the country and some invited teams from Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Kogi, Imo and Anambra states as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
According to the host local government boss, Hon. Frank Ilaboya, this edition of the tournament will be different from the previous ones. He called on the organisers, the Federation of Youths Soccer Clubs (FEYSOC), to put up a good event while assuring them of his council’s full support for the competition in memory of the first labour leader in Nigeria, the late Pa Michael Imoudu, who hailed from Oke-Ora, Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
“I am happy the event is here and we are ready to give it our full support. I want FEYSOC to make this edition of the tournament a colourful and attractive event different from what we have seen in the past. I trust FEYSOC will organise a good event because that is what I stand for,” Ilaboya said.
The former Lagos State SWAN Chairman and one-time Edo FA boss said his council is ready to develop sports in the locality, and host the youth teams, adding that the closing ceremony of this year’s Pa Imoudu Cup will feature a coaching clinic for under-13 school children.
“It is never too late. For me, I’m ready to launch a sports development programme here in Owan West Local Government Area. Let’s begin with Imoudu Cup and the rest will come. We shall host a good event and the under-13 school children will have the opportunity to learn the basics of the game through a coaching clinic to round up Imoudu Cup 2019 here in Sabongida Ora,” Ilaboya stated.
Pa Michael Aitokhamen Omiunu Imoudu, who is remembered for championing the cause of workers right from the colonial era, donated the giant trophy to FEYSOC in the year 2000 for youth football development in Nigeria.
The legendary nationalist, the first labour leader in Nigeria, died July 22, 2005 at the age of 103.
