Mali edge Gabon to book Afcon ticket

By Daily Sports on November 18, 2018

Mali have booked their place at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations following a 1-0 win over Gabon at the Stade d’Angondjé in Libreville on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles have qualified for the showpiece set to be hosted in Cameroon next year, no matter the results in the final rounds of qualifiers in group C.

Gabon will now need to beat Burundi in Bujumbura next March if they are to join Mali in Cameroon. The Swallows thumped already eliminated South Sudan 5-2 in Juba on Friday to move a step closer to a first Afcon tournament. Fiston-Abdul Razak netted a hat-trick for the visitors.

The Panthers struggled in attack without talisman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who withdrew from the squad due to injury, and they will be hoping that the Arsenal man will be fit and firing in March, in the final rounds of fixtures.

Moussa Doumbia scored the only goal of the game in the 11th minute of the clash. The French-based forward was quick to react after a defensive header cannoned off the crossbar, striking home the rebound as the Eagles etched their name among those qualified for next year’s tournament. (SuperSport)
