The 4th edition of the Bet9ja Football competition for grassroots clubs has been a huge success so far, with youth clubs strutting their fine stuffs in the past two weeks in Benin City. Fine goals have been recorded, brilliant individual performances have been seen, teams that looked tactically sound have been noticed in the course of the tournament. Now it's time for the champions to be known.
On Thursday afternoon that question will be answered as BJ Foundation FC and Rockers FC meet in a final match that holds a lot of promise given the top status of both teams.
Both clubs have been in superb form in this competition, parading youthful players full of zest and exquisite technical quality, dominating and winning games.
However both had to rely on the lottery of penalties in their semi-final matches to qualify for the showpiece final.
BJ Foundation’s striker Marvis Ogiomade scored an exquisite second half goal with a strike from outside the box to put his team ahead against Clibbers FC. However, Clibbers replied with a quick equaliser to send the thrilling game into penalties.
BJ converted all their kicks to win 5-4 with Clibbers missing one of theirs.
The other semi-final game between Rockers and Mission Side was also hotly contested and at the end of regulation time scores stood at 1 goal apiece.
The penalty shootout was a dramatic affair as Rockers lost two of their first five kicks but went on to triumph after mission Side failed to capitalise from being two goals up in the shootouts.
The final match comes up at 4:00pm at S&T Barracks pitch in Benin City on Thursday afternoon.
There will be a prize money of N300,000 for the winners and N100,000 for the second placed team.
Bet9ja Super Agent Roland Inonoje has received lots of accolades for floating the competition over the years.
