Far from being worried about facing Barcelona, Harry Kane believes that Tottenham can beat the Catalans in their Champions League game on Wednesday at Wembley. Injuries could affect the Londoners, but the striker insists there can be no excuses, with Lionel Messi a motivating factor.
“It’s a good chance to win and focus on ourselves, maybe there’s some pressure, but we want to show that people are wrong,
Kane said in his pre-match press conference: “We don’t want to start with two defeats and we know that Barcelona is a big challenge, but in our stadium we must be strong and look forward.
“Barcelona have fond memories of Wembley having won the Champions League there in 1992 and 2011, but Kane is looking to ensure they don’t make it a hat-trick of wins at the iconic venue.
“It’s a very important match, they’re a fantastic opponent, but we’ve shown in recent years that we can beat top teams,” he continued.
“As a footballer, you always want to measure yourself against the best in the world and Messi, without a doubt, it is a great test. Leo is fantastic and we want to prevent him from continuing to break records.
“We have to focus on our team because we also have great players, and though it’s never good to see your teammates injured, I think we have a great squad and we all have the opportunity to participate.
“Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi continue to set the bar, and Kane believes that’s a motivating factor. Messi has set the standard,” he added. “Both he and Ronaldo have reached figures of 50 goals per season and as a forward I try to do the same. Leo keeps scoring and that motivates me.”
