The Anambra Super 8 Football Tournament otherwise known as “My Anambra Football” has been scheduled to kick off at Chuba Ikpeazu Mini Stadium, Onitsha, on March 29, 2021.
Addressing sports writers at the end of the final draw for the Super 8 tournament, a member of Anambra Football State Football Association (AnSFA) and chairman of the Super 8 Organising Committee, Prince Oliver Ndigwe, urged the players to maintain discipline and stick to the rules of the game in order to build their careers as well as make a living for themselves.
He said: “We are through with the match fixtures; every team now know their opponents, so they can get ready for the commencement on March 29, 2021.
Ndigwe noted that eight players were also unveiled after the draws, as part of the measures put in place to help strengthen the teams through transfers those who did well during the play-offs, of which 27 grassroots football clubs were drawn from the three senatorial zones in the state.
“It is progress all the way; we organised a seminar for the eight clubs that will participate in the final phase of the competition in order to adequately equip them for future challenges.
“We gave opportunities to teams by going on transfers in order for them to be well fortified. Normally, the clubs were supposed to have 23 players but we gave them chance to have additional 3 to their sides,” he said.
Eight clubs participated in the final draw of the tournament which had all stakeholders in attendance.
Teams expected to participate in the tournament includes Smith City FC, Awka, Pope John Paul FC, Okouno and Rangels FC, Achina. Others were GP World FC Nnewi, IFechikwuku FC, Omor, Mecon FC, Umunze, Konti FC Umunnachi and Golden Boys FC Onitsha.
In her speech, the brand manager of Aspire FC Adazi Ani, Madonna Chidimma Ezeasor, described the tournament as a well-articulated move aimed at driving football, developing talents and building confidence among the youths.
She added that the tournament will encourage younger ones who are aspiring to be professional players and equip them to compete at the highest level in future.
According to her, cash prizes await teams including a Nationwide Division Two slot for the first-place winner.
The group matches for Super 8, which is organised by Anambra FA and sponsored by Aspire FC Adazi-Ani, an amateur football club based in Anambra State, would be played in Onitsha with grand finale at the NEROS Stadium, Nanka, on April 3.
