The 2018 Edo State League has got off to a goals-filled start in Benin City as grassroots clubs gun for the title and a chance to move up the ladder of Nigerian football into the amateur levels.
With two rounds of games having been played, teams have recorded high wins, while there have been high-scoring narrow wins.
One of the teams that have been recording big and is newly-formed Eagles Wings FC of Benin City who took two teams, Young Stars FC and Rising Sun FC to the cleaners in their group games.
Eagles Wings battered Rising Sun 5-0, while Young Stars bit the dust by the same 0-5 against Eagles Wings two days later (Monday) at the Uniben sports complex.
One player who is taking the state league at the scruff of its neck is Eagles Wings young striker Marvis Ogiomade.
The pacy and skillful attacker nicknamed 'Nani' after the former Manchester United's talismanic winger, bagged 4 goals in the demolition of Rising Sun FC while he netted a brace in the thrashing of Young Stars FC. With 6 goals in two games to his name, Ogiomade tops the scorers chart in the state League.
In the past two seasons, the teenager appeared as a converted right full back for another grassroots club BJ Foundation FC of Benin City in FA Cups and in the state League where he made a name as a flying right full back in the mold of the likes of former Barcelona star Dani Alves.
But Ogiomade has always privately preferred to play as a striker and coach Osaro Egharevba of Eagles Wings has given him a chance to prove his striking abilities in the big stage that is the State League and he's making a big impression.
