Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan may have damaged his medial knee ligament in a collision that forced him out of Thursday’s win over CSKA Moscow and could face several weeks on the sidelines, Arsene Wenger has said.
Mkhitaryan had to come off in the second half after a tough tackle and was set to undergo a scan on Friday to assess the full extent of the injury.
Wenger said after the 4-1 win that the Armenia international would definitely miss Sunday’s match against Southampton, and said on Friday that his absence could be longer than that.
“He has a scan and the fear is that his medial knee ligament has been touched. We’ll know more about that soon. For how long he will be out, I don’t know,” Wenger told the Arsenal website.
The Arsenal manager also confirmed to Sky Sports that Mkhitaryan could be out for several weeks if those fears are confirmed.
“I fear yes, I hope I’m wrong,” Wenger said.
That means the midfielder could face a race against time to be fit for the Europa League semifinals – assuming Arsenal avoid a massive slip-up in the second leg against Moscow next week.
The first leg of the semifinals is scheduled for April 26. (ESPN)
