Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has expressed his desire to return to action following a harrowing health scare that saw him placed in an induced coma after emergency surgery.

The 27-year-old sustained a severe injury during Forest’s 2-2 draw against Leicester City after a violent collision with the goalpost. Though he initially tried to play on, further medical examinations revealed a ruptured intestine—an injury that required immediate surgical intervention.

Post-surgery, Awoniyi was placed in an induced coma for stabilisation. He has since regained consciousness and is steadily recovering, though it is almost certain he will miss the remainder of the season.

The former Mainz 05 striker has received overwhelming support from teammates, coaches, club staff, and fans worldwide. In a heartfelt message shared via Instagram, Awoniyi broke his silence, offering an update on his condition and expressing deep gratitude for the outpouring of love.

“This season has been one of the most difficult of my career, but through it all, I have felt the love,” Awoniyi wrote. “By the grace of God, I am grateful to be here still, to still be fighting, to still be smiling, and to be in good spirits.”

He went on to thank those closest to him during his recovery:

“To my teammates, coaches, staff, and the entire Forest family, thank you for your well wishes. Seeing you all on your visits to the hospital lifted my spirits more than words can say.”

“Wishing the boys the very best in these last two games. Keep believing and keep pushing. I’m with you all the way, and I can’t wait to be back out there doing what I love.”

“To my family, friends, and football fans, thank you for the support. To everyone back home in Nigeria who has checked in on me, prayed for me, and left kind words—thank you. I see them, I feel them, and I carry them with me every day as I recover.”

Awoniyi’s statement has sparked an outpouring of goodwill messages, with fans and football stakeholders lauding his courage and praying for his swift return.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest secured a vital 2-1 victory over West Ham on Sunday, holding on to 7th place in the Premier League standings, level on points with Manchester City, who have a game in hand. The Tricky Trees will conclude their 2024/25 campaign against Chelsea, but will likely do so without one of their most passionate forwards.
