Nwabali better than Uzoho – Rohr

By Daily Sports Nigeria on January 25, 2024

Former Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has made his pick between Nigerian goalkeepers Francis Uzoho and Stanley Nwabali, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Benin Republic head coach in a chat with Osasu Obayiuwana confessed that Nwabali was better than Uzoho, backing Jose Peseiro’s decision to make the Chippa United goalkeeper Nigeria’s number one choice at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Uzoho made his Eagles debut in a 4–2 friendly win against Argentina in 2017 under Rohr but following a series of blunders and uninspiring performances, the 27-year-old lost his spot to Nwabali, who was only recently invited to the national team a few weeks before the AFCON.

After impressing in a 2-0 friendly loss to Guinea earlier in January, Nwabali was installed as the Super Eagles’ new number one.

After three caps to his name the South African-based goalkeeper has let in only one goal and has shown some signs that he could make the position his for a very long time and Rohr in a conversation with Obayiuwana said he preferred Nwabali to Uzoho.

“I have to say that Nwabali Bobo is better than Francis Uzoho,” Rohr said.

“He is calm and has very good control of his area.”

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Nwabali is expected to man the post for the Eagles again when they face Cameroon in the round of 16 of the AFCON when both sides face on Saturday at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, Abidjan.
