The UK paper Daily Mirror is reporting that embattled Arsenal Manager, Arsene Wenger’s contract situation is being seriously monitored at Barcelona with the Spanish giants struggling behind Real Madrid in the La Liga table.
Barca’s Coach Luis Enrique has come under fire of late as his team is looking shaky as shown in their 0-4 trouncing in Paris by PSG in the European Champions League.
And with Arsene Wenger’s Gunners floundering of late, it seems very likely that the Arsenal gaffer’s time with the club is coming to an end after about 20 years of meritorious service.
So is Barcelona looking forward to signing Arsene Wenger as manager next season? It’s hard to tell what’s really going on behind the scenes at clubs, but it’s not inconceivable to think that this is a possibility.
Firstly, Wenger has made it clear after Arsenal’s heavy 1-5 defeat at Bayern Munich that he would be managing next season, whatever happens with his remaining time at the Gunners this season’s end.
So, the Frenchman has surely left the door open for other clubs to bid for him in case he calls time in Arsenal this season.
Wenger’s love for the beautiful intricate passing football has defined his coaching method over the years and has made him the football icon he is today. Despite his Premier League title drought that dates back to about 13 years now, there’s still the feeling that with a club the size of Barcelona who are willing to pay top money to attract the very best, Wenger can still win big things in world club football. Its style of play surely fits with that of Barcelona and the Blaugrana would surely want to guard that style.
For me it would be good to see Wenger become successful again. I’ve longed to see that happen at Arsenal, not the least because I feel he is a decent man and I always like to see good people win.
However, I seem to have come to the realisation that Wenger may not become as successful as he once was at Arsenal. I refuse to be disrespectful in my assessment of him as some have been. He’s been a great manager who many agree, revolutionised the game in England and that respect for his achievement lives till this moment.
If he separates from Arsenal this season and heads for Barca, I would love to see his Barcelona team play lovely football and I would love to see his gentle smile as he lifts a major trophy.
But there’s a difference now between what I wish for Wenger and what I want him to do. I think at 67 it’s perhaps time to quit club football management, if he quits Arsenal at the end of this season. The pressure and overall risk involved in starting all over at Barcelona or anywhere else have a potential of further denting his record in management. Nobody likes a good old man who sticks around and gets so much stick and yet never goes away.
Results at Barcelona or anywhere else may turn out horrible for Wenger at the start and the new employees could just panic and sack him immediately. That’s very possible and that would further destroy the legacy of a good old man.
