Awoniyi hailed for rescuing Forest from relegation zone

By Daily Sports Nigeria on January 5, 2023

Taiwo Awoniyi was the only player on the scoresheet for the match between Southampton and Nottingham Forest. His goal, 27′, made the difference for Forest which rescued them from the bottom three.

Awoniyi has since received accolades for his terrific escapade and fine form this season, following his strike on Wednesday night.

BBC Sports has tagged Awoniyi as ‘Terrific Taiwo’ as all four of Nottingham Forest’s Premier League wins so far this season have been 1-0, with Awoniyi netting the winner in three of those.

“It’s better to be out of the bottom three than in it for sure but it’s one step at a time. I really challenged the players to get the first away win and challenged myself and the staff, we’re all in it together.

“We had a couple of chances in the last two games to get out of the bottom three, now we’re out, but the objective is not just to stay out but move up the table, but that’s easier said than done and we will do everything we can to get results.

“There’s a long way to go and tough moments make you stronger,” he said.

Awoniyi scored the only goal which earned Nottingham Forest their first away win this season.

Forest with the win went up to 15th place on the league table and now have 17 points, with Everton replacing them in the bottom three.

The Super Eagles striker has now scored four goals in 16 appearance in the English topflight this season.

All four of Taiwo Awoniyi’s Premier League goals this season have been the opening goal of the matches. Only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane (5 each) have scored first in more different Premier League games this season.

Awoniyi also received his first Man-of-The-Match Award following his outstanding performance in Nottingham Forest’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea on Sunday night. An award that thrilled the Nigerian and was his first of many as he also won the Man-of-The-Match Award for his stellar performance against Southampton last night.

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper, speaking after the match said he was glad to be out of the relegation zone.
