Royal FC of Lagos have emerged winners of the world five aside football championship sponsored by healthy milk brand Olympic. The outstanding grass root football club were crowned champions at the final of the five aside competition held at the main bowl of the Campos Mini-stadium in Lagos Island.

Royal FC, who had an unbeaten run from the start of the competition, defeated Ago FC of Abeokuta 3-2 on penalties after a tough 1-1 draw to emerge winner as well as a chance to represent Nigeria at the world five aside football championships in Thailand.

Speaking on the objective of the competition, Olympic Brand Manager, Mr Bamise Oyegbami, said that it is the brand’s way of demonstrating its deep commitment to mental growth and physical development.

 “Football is a sport that enhances healthy living and physical development and regular intake of Olympic Milk fortifies the body and supplies essential nutritional requirement for healthy physical and mental development keeping you active for longer. “At Olympic we tend to support our consumers and this is our way of supporting grassroots football in Nigeria,” he said.

Bamise added: “We believe that engaging in relevant exercises and sports like football is necessary for a healthy mind and body that is why we are proud to be part of the five aside football competition.”

Kabiru Nasiru emerged as most valuable player with a record of seven goals in the finale to also emerge as highest goal scorer, securing him the golden boot in the competition and a chance to visit the Ethihad Stadium, England, to watch English Premiership title contenders Manchester City live.

Bamise assured that plans are in place to receive the most valuable player and highest goal scorer at the Etihad Stadium. He said that as soon as the team returns from the trip to Thailand the brand would make sure that the player ends up in Manchester City.

The event had in attendance a number of notable dignitaries from the Nigeria Football Federation and Lagos State Football Association. Former Nigerian internationals Victor Ikpeba and Jonathan Akpoborie were also in attendance. 

Over 1,000 teams from different parts of the country registered to compete in the six geo-political zones of Nigeria and from the regional qualifiers 16 teams qualified to compete in Lagos for the title and a chance to represent Nigeria at the 2016 F5WC in Thailand.

The World Football Fives Championship (F5WC) is the world’s first ever world indoor 5 Aside tournament. It is created by Sports Event International DMCC (SEI) Dubai and managed in Nigeria by Five Sports Limited, specifically for amateur players aged 16 and above from every corner of the globe.
