Coach of Enyimba International FC, Paul Aigbogun, has said that the goal scoring difficulty experienced by the team this season may have ended with the double strike from Stephen Chukwude and Ifeanyi Anaemena in the win against the Akure Gunners in last Sunday encounter. In a chat with npfl.ng, shortly after the fixture, the former Warri Wolves gaffer described the win as a turning point.
“We are glad we scored more than once today. We have not done that since the start of the season. It was a difficult game and we made the right changes that brought us the result. It is a turning point for the team.
“The players are working very hard and doing what they ought to do. We have to put behind our challenges, but keeping the momentum is also key,” he said.
At full time on Sunday at the UJ Esuene Stadium, Calabar, former champions, Enyimba International FC finally scored their first double digits this season. The team has scored just eight times and conceded six in the ongoing campaign, but has also failed in all nine matches before Sunday to put two goals behind any of their opponents in those nine outings. The team has recorded lone goal wins against Nasarawa United, Abia Warriors and Plateau United and draws in Makurdi, Maiduguri, Port Harcourt, and Kano and on their turf against Heartland as well as a 2-0 slump to Katsina United.
Stephen Chukwude (12th minute) and Ifeanyi Anaemena (70th minute) got the goals that earned Enyimba the victory, but the latter's own goal had drawn the visitors level earlier in the second half. It is pertinent to note that the Peoples Elephant is still without the services of league record goal scorer and her captain, Mfon Udoh, is recovering from a knee problem. The club for the first time this season is having a sniff at the title, tying at the top on 17 points with Kano Pillars which enjoys superior goal advantage to occupy the first position.
