Martins Usule’s late equaliser was all Katsina United needed to pick their first point on the road in one of the matchday 10 ties against Wikki Tourists at the New Jos Stadium in Jos.
‘The Chanji Boys’, who have lost all their four away games so far this season, fought gallantly and picked a vital point on the road against a strong and resilient Wikki Tourists.
It was a very tight contest between the two sides who were very cautious not to make mistake and this slowed the pace of the game with few scoring chances.
It was the hosts who came close to opening the scoring just 10 minutes into the game, when Bala Zaka dribbled past two of his markers and tried his luck from distance, but his effort went just inches away from the goal.
Katsina United shot stopper Yinka David was forced to make another brilliant save just eight minutes later from a well-taken left-footed close range strike by Nafiu Bala.
Shammah Tanze would then brake the deadlock for the hosts on 24 minutes, when he raced towards a loose ball that the Katsina United defence failed to deal with and tapped into the back of the net to give Wikki Tourists the lead.
Katsina United fought back and almost got the equaliser on 41 minutes through Joshua Agboola, but his curling strike went inches away from the cross-bar as the hosts went to the break a goal up.
It was a bright start to the second half as Yinka David was forced to an early save from a low drive by the scorer of the first goal Tanze.
Abba Umar also came close on 59th minutes, but he was denied by the dependable goalkeeper Yinka David.
Both teams made tactical substitutions to fortify their team but nothing would come from these substitutes until Katsina United threw Martins Usule into fray to increase the number of strikers.
And the former Niger Tornadoes man did not disappoint as he found the back of the net with his second touch on the ball to give the visitors a vital equaliser just two minutes to stoppage.
Usule’s equaliser gave Katsina United their first away point on the road.
The Makurdi-born striker is now Katsina United leading scorer with four goals.
