The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and insurance giant WAPIC Insurance Plc have sealed a five years deal to usher in a new business partnership even as football authorities have revealed that the Insurance company paid the first salary of Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr.
It is believed the partnership would work to the benefit of the federation and footballers if well managed at the end of the day.
Daily Sports gathered that in the terms of the deal, the insurance giant, which was originally part of the Access Bank group will serve as the new co-sponsor and official insurance service provider for the Super Eagles for five years.
The official signing ceremony for the partnership agreement, which took place in Lagos last Friday had in attendance, Olufemi Obaleke (Executive Director), Bode Ojeniyi, (Executive Director) and Yinka Adekoya, all of WAPIC Insurance Plc. Also in attendance were the President NFF, Amaju Pinnick; NFF First and Second Vice-Presidents Seyi Akinwunmi and Shehu Dikko, as well as Aisha Falode.
“This relationship is for five years with an option of renewal. They will insure all our players and events,” Dikko affirmed at the event.
According Akinwunmi, “As a matter of fact, WAPIC paid the first salary of the Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr. So this relationship did not just happen out of the blues.”
The partnership is part and parcel of a string of renewed efforts at encouraging football partnership in the country through improved private sector participation.
It would be recalled that activities in the domestic scene of the game would drastically improve even as supporting firms get better brand visibility and extended market endorsement from millions of football-loving Nigerians.
Recently, the NFF signed a five-year deal worth $4 million with beverage giants, Coca-Cola.
Football analysts believe that the new deals have portrayed NFF as being alive to its responsibility of opening up the Nigerian football space. But only transparency and accountability on the part of the executive committee would bring about the much needed confidence from the partners.
The domestic Nigerian football scene trails those of the better organised leagues, notably, in North Africa.
