Long-term planning is a quality that is so often overlooked for short-term gains in the world of today. Perseverance in a worthwhile venture is a value that could turn out to be a sweet, succulent fruit.
For Super Eagles and Chelsea star Victor Moses who shone like a brilliant star to help Nigeria qualify for Russia 2018 World Cup, and Douglas Idahosa, the grassroots coach who helped him kick-start his football career from the tough Benin City scene in the early part of the present millennium, these qualities are what they have exuded over the years, and today they are reaping the benefits in cash and recognition.
The duo have just been nominated by the Nigeria Awards for Sporting Excellence (NASE) in conjunction with Daily Sports Newspaper, a big and growing voice in Nigerian sports reportage, for awards in recognition of their contributions this year in enriching Nigeria’s football.
The award ceremony is scheduled to hold on December 9 in Lagos.
Victor Moses is being honoured as Player of The Year. The dreadlocks-bearing player has had a fantastic season for club and country this year. In May he won the English Premier League with Chelsea FC, making telling contributions from a new-found practical wing-back role for Chelsea coach Antonio Conte
Moses’ mazy runs, abundant strength and a keen eye for goals were all in the fore this year for his club and country.
He has been exceptional for the Super Eagles this year, helping Nigeria to see off the challenge of Zambia, Cameroon and Algeria in the race to qualify for next year’s Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Douglas Idahosa could be picking up the Grassroots Sports Promoter of the Year award. His proteges in the present Super Eagles include first team players Elderson Echiejile, Mikel Agu and Victor Moses.
The appearance of the three lads in recent Super Eagles matches is the first time that as much as three players who were educated at the same grassroots club are featuring at the same time in the first team of the Eagles. They all played for Idahosa’s grassroots club BJ Foundation at various times in the past, where they got the relevant football education that helped their talents to take roots and blossom in the form a sterling European careers.
Idahosa has won several national and international youth competitions with BJ Foundation. His unrelenting struggle to bring up stars, despite tough economic conditions for himself and the players in BJ Foundation over the years, has begun to bear fruits for the country and the young club owner.
There will be several other awardees on a night that would celebrate the best in Nigeria’s sports life.
The Award Committee Chairman is Ex-NFA Board Member, Prince Isidore Oduah.
It is expected that the NASE awards will feature the very best of the Nigerian sports personalities and government and private top shots.
