After much publicity about him switching allegiance to his home country, Tammy Abraham has made a U-turn to reaffirm his commitment to England.
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Amaju Pinnich had claimed that the 19 year old Chelsea striker Abraham, who is on loan at Swansea this season, had committed to declaring for the African nation to secure a place at next summer’s World Cup.
However Abraham, who has three England Under-21 goals to his name, has distanced himself from those claims. In a statement, Abraham said: “Contrary to reports in the media I would like to clarify that I have not agreed to switch my national team allegiance.
“I can confirm I met the President of the NFF after our last game against Tottenham at Wembley on Saturday given he is a friend of my father.
“However, any suggestion that I have made a decision to change my international representation is incorrect and wide of the mark.
“I have informed The FA that I remain available for selection for England.” Abraham’s words will be welcomed by his Swansea manager Paul Clement, who urged the striker to remain in the England setup.
“For me, from my point of view, I hope he stays with the English national team,” Clement said. (Vanguard)
