Nigerian champions Plateau United remained in the hunt for more silverware in the Aiteo Cup with a 2-1 win over Akwa Starlets while troubled 3SC were handed a heavy 5-1 defeat by Akwa United on Wednesday.
After a 0-0 display in the first half between Plateau United and Akwa Starlets, Jimmy Ambrose put the NPFL champions in front and Hamzat Owolabi added a second late in the game before Aniekeme Asuquo got Starlets' goal.
Akwa United joined Plateau United in the last eight in style with a 5-1 humbling of 3SC who could be relegated from the NPFL should Gombe United fail to defeat Wikki Tourists on Saturday in a game earlier abandoned due to crowd trouble.
Amaechi Orji scored a hat-trick and Hassan Babangida and Christian Pyagbara got a goal each to complete the rout despite Abu Azeez having equalised for 3SC in the first half.
ABS FC, FC Ifeanyiubah, Osun United and Sunshine Stars also qualified for the quarterfinals with wins against Unicem Rovers, Heartland, El-Kanemi Babes and Ngwa FC respectively in the round of 16.
The women's side of the Aiteo Cup produced big scorelines as Nasarawa United hit Beautiful Tours 10-0 to progress and Rivers Angels defeated Ben Women FC 9-0.
Edo Queens and Sure Babes also qualified for the quarterfinals.
Six matches, including two in the men's competition, will be replayed on Saturday after they ended in draws. (Supersports)
