Rivers United blame sell-out allegations for thrashing at Abia Warriors

By Daily Sports on September 10, 2017

Rivers United have blamed  an embarrasing 4-1 thrashing at Abia Wariors on the final matchday 38 of the Nigeria Professional Football League to allegations by a top club official that they were throwing away the game by half time.

Scorenigeria.com.ng reports that Rivers United were late to come out of the dressing room for the second period as a result of players’ protest when a senior management official of the club confronted the players that their performance in the first period was below par and he suspected they wanted to throw the match.

The angry players shouted on the official and even threatened not to continue the match until coach Stanley Eguma, pacified the players not to be weighed down by the accusation.

“How could a senior manager of his status shout on us like that, accusing us of having sold the game?”, the players told scorenigeria.com.ng after the match.“

If he was sure of his words, he could have pointed out those he believed were involved.

“If not for coach (Stanley Eguma), we wouldn’t have continued with the second half so that the he (the official), would have played the remaining 45 minutes.”

Another player added: “It’s unfortunate that we lost 4-1, it was the biggest defeat we suffered in the season and as players, it is not good for our careers.“ But that is football and we have to deal with it”.

Rivers United took the lead 24 minutes into the first half when Guy Kueiman got to the positive end of a swift counter attacking football from the right hand channel.
