Ghana reignited their hopes of reaching the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia following a 5-1 thumping of Congo in a Group E clash at the Stade Municipal de Kintélé on Tuesday.
Thomas Partey (3) and Richmond Boakye (2) sharing all Ghana's goals between themselves as the Black Stars bounced back from their disappointing showing in Kumasi last Friday.
The defeat brings an end to the Red Devils dreams of reaching next year's world showpiece, even as African giants Egypt moved closer to a first World Cup appearance since 1990 when they defeated Uganda 1-0 on Tuesday thanks to an early goal from Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah in Alexandria.
Salah sneaked behind the defence and after goalkeeper Denis Onyango parried his first attempt, he poked the rebound into the net to decide the top-of-the-table showdown.
After four rounds, Ghana now placed 3rd with five points behind Egypt with nine points and Uganda seven. Congo occupies the bottom end with one point.
Although Egypt have been the dominant African football force, winning the Cup of Nations a record seven times, they consistently struggle in the World Cup, qualifying only twice.
