Struggling Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) pulled off a big result against El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri when they got a spectacular 1-1 draw on Matchday 36 through Abayomi Adebayo's late goal.
The Borno club were running away with all three points until Abayomi scored with the last kick of the match that led to the two sides sharing the spoils.
That performance, according to Shooting Stars forward, Abayomi marks the beginning of their effective journey out of relegation.
Abayomi who could not hide his excitement after he scored the equalizer with a flying header on the dot of full time in the game after Ibrahim Babangida had given the home side the lead on 48 minutes believes the point earned is the beginning of their march away from relegation.
The Shooting Stars man added that he is now sure the team will remain in the top flight next season.
"I am happy for the goal I scored. It was a tough game for us but we thank God we made a point from it. The goal means a lot for me especially considering the crucial period we are in now. I hope we have started the journey out of relegation," Abayomi told npfl.ng
Things had looked like going awry for Shooting Stars when captain Seun Akinyemi was replaced just after 14 minutes following a collision with an opponent. He was replaced with Sodiq Suraj and Abayomi whose goal was his fifth of the season spoke of that moment when the captain was stretchered out.
"His (Seun) early exit affected our tactical plan a little but we were happy because as professionals we quickly adjusted. We thank God he is alive and OK," Abayomi said to npfl.ng.
Shooting Stars play hosts to Akwa United on Sunday before they travel away to Niger Tornadoes on the last day of the season.
