Coach Gernot Rohr has said he expects Germany-based defender Leon Balogun to make the Super Eagles back four a lot more solid for World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon next month.
Nigeria tackle the Indomitable Lions on September 1 in Uyo with a reverse clash in Yaounde three days later.
Injury ruled out Mainz 05 central defender Balogun from an AFCON 2019 qualifier against South Africa in Uyo in June, which Nigeria lost 2-0.
But Rohr said in an interview Balogun’s return will stabilize the Eagles back four.
“Defensively I hope that the return of Leon Balogun will make us better,” the Franco-German stated.
Balogun has formed a superb partnership in the heart of the defence with William Troost-Ekong, who now plays in Turkey.
Rohr also said the Eagles new goalkeeper trainer will decide who of the three goalkeepers called up for the Cameroon game – Daniel Akpeyi, Dele Alampasu and Ikechukwu Ezenwa – will man the post next month.
“We have Akpeyi, we have Ezenwa, we have Alampasu, we will see. We have a local goalkeeper, we have a very young one and we have another one who is more experienced, he is playing in South Africa, and we will see with our goalkeeper coaches to determine who will start the game,” he offered.
