CHAN Eagles agree to release players after clubs protest

Players in the CHAN Eagles training camp in Kano will be allowed to rejoin their clubs for this weekend’s matches, but on the condition they fly their players to match venues that are to faraway from Kano.

Several clubs including Akwa United were up in arms against a plan not to release their players in the national team camp ahead of a CHAN playoff against Benin later this month, arguing that this could work against them as the season is in its business end.

Eagles spokesman Toyin Ibitoye said in a statement that the players in the CHAN Eagles camp will be released for weekend matches in the NPFL but on the condition these players do not have to travel a long distance to the match venues of their respective clubs.

“Players will be released to their clubs for this weekend’s NPFL matches but the coaches want the clubs to ensure the players don’t make long-haul travels by road because the stress and fatigue of long road trips affect the players’ output,” read Ibitoye’s statement.

“So, clubs who seriously want their players for this weekend’s games at venues that are too far to access by road from Kano should endeavor to send them flight tickets or risk not having them released from camp.”

The CHAN Eagles face Benin in Cotonou on August 13 with the second leg in Kano on August 19.
