Rivers United crash out of CAF Confederation Cup

By Daily Sports on July 8, 2017

Rivers United put up a spirited fight only to crash out of this year’s CAF Confederation Cup after they fell 2-1 to hosts FUS Rabat of Morocco in final Group A match tonight.

The result meant that Tunisia’s Club Africain won Group A on the back of a 4-0 trouncing of KCAA of Uganda in Tunis.

Club Africain finished on 12 points, FUS Rabat were second on nine points, KCAA placed third also on nine points ahead of bottom team Rivers United, who recorded six points.

On Friday night in Morocco, Rivers United took the lead against the run of play through Bolaji Sakin in the dying minutes of the first half when he fired home a loose ball from inside the box.

The home team drew level soon after the interval.

They scored the winning goal from the penalty spot in the 88th minute after Rivers United skipper Festus Austine handled the ball inside his box.

The Moroccans created by far the better chances, hitting the post in the first half before a Rivers United defender cleared off the goal line in the second period.

Rivers United goalkeeper Abiodun Akande pulled off several top-class saves to keep his team in this game, before FUS Rabat eventually carried the day to book their passage into the last eight of the annual competition. (ScoreNigeria.com)
