Eagles drop to 39th position in FIFA rankings, glued to sixth spot in Africa

By Daily Sports on July 7, 2017

Three-time African champions, Nigeria dropped to the 39th position on the latest FIFA world ranking on Thursday.

However, Nigeria retained their sixth spot on the continent behind leaders Egypt, Senegal, Congo Democratic Republic, Tunisia and reigning African champions, Cameroon.

Nigeria’s one-spot drop on the world ranking may not be unconnected with the shocking 0-2 loss to South Africa in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier in Uyo, Nigeria.

On the African scene, Congo Democratic Republic (28th, up 11) and Mauritania (81st, up 23) registered their highest positions to date.

Germany climbed to the world number one spot after two solid years in the shadow of other challengers.

Following their 1-0 win over Chile (7th, down 3) in St Petersburg, the newly crowned FIFA Confederations Cup champions overtook Brazil (2nd, down 1) and leapfrogged Argentina (3rd, down 1).

European neighbours Poland (6th, up 4) also have cause to celebrate, having risen to their best-ever ranking.
