Algeria’s new coach Lucas Alcaraz was left unsatisfied by his team’s 1-0 win over Togo on Sunday night.
The Fennec Foxes edged the West Africans 1-0 in a Group D qualifier for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Blida.
Yet it was an unconvincing performance from Alcaraz’s side, who struggled to capitalise on their superiority and had to settle for just the one goal from Sofiane Hanni midway through the first half.
Alcaraz insists that the match came at an awkward time (due to it being the end of the season and during the observation of Ramadan), but is hopeful that his team will improve in future matches.
"It was a game that was played in a difficult time. In addition to the end of the season, there is the diet that is completely different from the other days since the players [are observing] Ramadan,” said Alcaraz after the match.
“But basically, what explains the decline of [our play] in the second period is the fact of not being able to capitalise all the offensive occasions in the first period. This has had a negative impact on the performance of my players. "
The Spanish coach added, “We are in the process of implementing a new game strategy in this team. But I want to say that any game strategy needs time.
“It is hoped that this will bear fruit in the coming weeks and months. I hope I have gained some time with these last two games.”
Algeria will be in competitive action again in August and September when they face Zambia in a double header in the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup.
