After dominating Felix Diaz on Saturday night before stopping him after the 10th round to retain his titles, Terence Crawford apparently is willing to move up in weight to face one of the two biggest stars in boxing.
Crawford (31-0, 22 KOs) is the best fighter in the 140-pound junior welterweight division, and now, it appears he’s ready to move up seven pounds to welterweight in order to fight Manny Pacquiao or Keith Thurman. Crawford also mentioned he could fight Julius Indongo, who owns two of the world title belts in the junior welterweight division and would allow Crawford to try to unify all four belts.
But no, Crawford knows exactly where he wants to go.
“Pacquiao, that’s the only fight out there we’re really looking for,” Crawford told HBO after his destruction of Diaz was complete. “If not, [Julius] Indongo is here. He came to my fight. Let’s get it on, Indongo. Keith Thurman, whoever. I’m willing to invite anybody.”
Pacquiao would likely make Crawford the most money. Assuming Pacquiao gets by Jeff Horn in July – and that’s not necessarily a sure bet – he could potentially meet Crawford near the end of 2017. And considering Crawford (who’s No. 11 on the Forbes Pound-For-Pound Moneymakers list) and Pacquiao (who’s No. 9) are both promoted by Top Rank, it doesn’t seem like it should be difficult to put together.
But even Crawford isn’t sure.
“Who knows?” he said Saturday when asked if he thought Pacquiao would actually fight him at this point in their careers.
The problem for Crawford is that he represents a big risk for Pacquiao with perhaps not enough of a payoff. The other problem for Crawford in the immediate future: It’s also quite unlikely that he’ll meet Thurman anytime soon, especially since the undefeated welterweight posted this on Twitter on Friday.
