Adetunji restates season's goals target

By Daily Sports on May 17, 2017

Sunday Adetunji has quietly gone about his business of scoring goals in the Nigeria Professional Football League in the past three seasons.

The attacker, born in Osun State but raised in Lagos, has traversed the three major divisions of the country in four years. Adetunji was a household name in Maiduguri where he carved a niche for himself in the colours of El-Kanemi Warriors before going West to represent Shooting Stars last term.

Adetunji has almost consummately filled the dreaded vacuum created by the exit of local hero, Chisom Chikatara at Umuahia-based club Abia Warriors ever since he joined the club at the start of this football season. He has weighed in with nine league goals and his overall contributions to the team has endeared him to the hearts of the fans at the Abia state capital.

"I was not sure of how it would be," Adetunji begun in this chat with www.npfl.ng

"I know how well they love Chisom (Chikatara) here but I was ready to give it a shot and make a name for myself," he added.

Despite missing the first five matches of the season due to registration issues, the big Number 9 has scored nine goals for his team but he insists the job is nowhere done and hopes to continue from there in the second half of the season.

"I have a target which I have to meet up with. I want to beat my last season's goals record and score 20 goals this season," stated Adetunji who scored ten league goals for Shooting Stars last term.

The Ilesa-born star also spoke on his integration to life in the Eastern part of Nigeria, admitting that his teammates have been of help in keeping him going about his business.

"If I could say, many things have been keeping me going, God first and then everybody here at Abia warriors. They have been so supportive.

"I have been able to focus on my job with their help and I have no distractions at all."

Midway through the 2016/17 season and Abia Warriors are sixth on the NPFL table. Their top marksman restates his team's aspirations coming into the season and he believes it is quite achievable.

"Before the start of the league, we had a target to finish among the first 3, so we know the task ahead of us so and we are going to put in our best to achieve that in the second stanza. Like you can see, we're improving week in week out," he averred.

Warriors are currently ahead of their more illustrious state rivals, Enyimba based on superior goals difference and in achieving their aim of making a continental appearance for the first time in the club's history next term, they must continually hope to stay atop of established forces like the two-time African champions.
