Eguavoen off to winning start with Sunshine Stars, tames Rangers 2-0

By George Akpayen on May 1, 2017

Former Nigeria head coach Austin Eguavoen began his managerial reign at Sunshine Stars with a 2-0 success over Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions Enugu Rangers on Sunday.

Ajibola Otegbeye and Alaba Adeniyi scored the goals for Sunshine Stars as they moved out of the drop zone.

Eguavoen named three new signings, Ebitimi Agogo, Thompson Ezekiel and Ike ThankGod, among the substitutes for Sunshine Stars, while Rangers interim head coach Chukwuma Agbo handed Etim Matthew his first start in more than four weeks.

Inside the opening 10 minutes, Tope Abraham’s effort was always rising and did not trouble Rangers goalkeeper Bassey Akpan.

Scoring chances in the first 45 minutes were at a premium. Just on the half hour mark, Rangers new boy Ifeanyi George tried to score from a chip-shot but missed the target.

On 36 minutes Otegbeye thought he had given Sunshine Stars the lead, but his goal was correctly ruled out for offside.

Otegbeye would then give Sunshine Stars the lead from the spot 13 minutes into the second half after Osas Okoro was ruled to have handled the ball in his box.

It did not take too long before Sunshine Stars extended their lead. Substitute Thompson Ezekiel’s assist was turned in by Alaba Adeniyi in the 77th minute after a sweeping counter-attacking move.

The win took the Akure Gunners to 14th place with 24 points after 19 matches.
