Chinedu Udechukwu was the hero as he netted a brace for Katsina United in their 2-0 win over Rivers United in a rearranged Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match decided on Thursday.
Katsina United started aggressively and should have scored in the opening minute, but Udechukwu watched in agony as his fiercely hit strike from 25 yards beat the Rivers United goalkeeper Abiodun Akande but crashed against the crossbar.
The lively attacker was to get his due reward for a brilliant first-half display with a fantastic goal soon after.
He rose highest in the United box in the ninth minute to head home Isah Abdulrahman’s cross from the left after Akande failed to read the delivery.
The hosts were the better side for most parts of the first half and should have scored more before the interval.
Rivers United failed to hit the heights attained in last Saturday’s CAF Confederation Cup game against Rayon Sports in Rwanda, but almost got back on level terms shortly before half time.
Godbless Asamoah was culpable for a shocking miss from six yards when he fired well wide when left unmarked and with just the Katsina United goalkeeper Yinka David at his mercy.
Rivers United started the second half in bright fashion and should have been back on level terms soon after.
Emeka Ogbugh showed great endeavour with a mazy run that took him into the Katsina United box, and his firm shot was pushed into the path of the onrushing Bolaji Sakin who somehow missed an open goal from three yards.
The visitors were made to pay dearly for that miss in the 63rd minute when Udechukwu completed his brace with a firm header off an Eric Gwammy cross.
Nzube Anaezembe struck the post shortly before the end while substitute Bernard Ovoke fired over with just the goalkeeper to beat late on.
Rivers United were, in truth, second best for most parts of the entertaining contest and Katsina United held on for a richly deserved victory. © supersport.com
