Confed Cup: Rivers United cautious over Rayon threat

By Sammy Wejinya on April 22, 2017

Rivers United’s Technical Manager Stanley Eguma has warned that the CAF Confederation Cup playoff tie against Rwandan club, Rayon Sports has yet to be put to bed.

The Nigerian club won 2-0 in the first leg decided at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt last Sunday.

Eguma however believes the tie is still in the balance and expects a strong performance from ‘Gikundiro’ on Saturday at the Amahoro Stadium, Kigali.

“Nothing has been decided yet,” Eguma told supersport.com shortly after the Rivers United contingent arrived in Kigali on Thursday night.

“Rayon proved they are a very good side in the first leg and were very unlucky not to score in Port Harcourt.

“If we play (on Saturday) like we have already qualified, we will be knocked out; I have no doubt about that.” he said.

Doubts had been raised over the fitness of United left back, Zoumana Doumbia but the Togolese star eventually travelled with the Nigerian contingent to Kigali on Thursday.

Eguma however disclosed that a late fitness test will be conducted on the defender on Saturday to ascertain if he will be available for selection.

“Zoumana’s condition has improved and that is why he travelled with us to Kigali.

“I still don’t know if he will play but we will assess him on Friday evening and Saturday morning before making a decision,” he said.

Rayon Sports will need a three-goal margin victory over Rivers United at the Amahoro Stadium, Kigali on Saturday to progress to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup.
