The National Association of Nigeria Professional Footballers (NANPF) has condemned the recent harassments and attacks on match officials, coaches and players by supporters of Remo Stars, Kastina United and Kano Pillars.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Lagos, NANPF General Secretary, Comrade Austin Popo, said the attacks left the victims with several degrees of injuries. He called for clubs to caution their supporters, officials and players from such acts capable of bringing the game to disrepute and denting the image of the Nigerian Professional Football League.
“The Union wants professional footballers in the leagues to refrain from any acts capable of inciting others to commit violence during matches and see themselves as a brand and any dent on the brand will affect their image adversely with far reaching consequences on their career and future beyond the immediate sanctions imposed by the League Management Company, knowing full well that there is life after their professional playing career,” the statement read.
Popo also disclosed that the President of the Players Union, Comrade Dahiru Sadi (MFR) applaud the swift response from the League Management Company in sanctioning the affected clubs, officials and players found wanting in a bid to guarantee and improve safety at league venues.
