Why we shifted Delta Sports championship: Aliu

By Augustine Kalu on April 13, 2017

Chairman of Delta State Swimming Association, Chief Mrs. Chinonye Daphey Aliu, has given reason the state planned sports fiesta that was supposed to have taken place last month in various cities across the state did not hold.

According to the sports administrator, the shifting of the championship to April was due to the unavailability of the Hon. Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Barrister Solomon Dalung.

She said the state sports fiesta had to be shifted because the time proposed for it coincided with the time the Minister was engaged with a lot of official responsibilities which made him unavailable for the championship. She explained that the state planned to have the minister around during the championship particularly during the closing ceremony in order to witness firsthand the sports potentials of the state.

Aliu stated this in an interview.

“The championship did not take place as planned. It was first shifted to April due to the unavailable of the Hon Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Barrister Solomon Dalung,” Chief Mrs. Aliu said.

“The time proposed for the championship in March coincided with the period the Hon. Minister was seriously engaged with other national sports assignments which made him unavailable.

“It was our plan to have the Hon. Minister around during the championship particularly during the closing ceremony and since he was unavailable, the championship was shifted to take place this month to enable him witness the sports potentials of Delta State,” Aliu explained.

“Meanwhile, there is a new development. I have just been informed that the championship has suffered yet another postponement. The reason given is that the competition if held as planned this month, it will clash with the Nigeria Universities Games (NUGA).

“Therefore, the championship has been shifted once again to May. As I am talking to you, I am on way to the office and when I get to the office, I will confirm the dates for the championship.

“As a matter of fact, I am lucky that the printer is yet to print the invitation cards for the championship, that is my saving grace,” Aliu explained.
