As Nigeria prepares for the soccer event of the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil, defender Keigho Saturday Erimuya has assured that the players of the Samson Siasia-led Under-23 team have learned lessons from their not-too-impressive outing in the recently-held invitational football tournament in Suwon, South Korea.
Erimuya recently admitted to Daily Sports his disappointments with the results the team recorded during the tournament.
“We are Nigeria and when we wear the Green-white-Green shirt in any soccer game we should be doing well. When we don’t manage to do that, we are naturally disappointed,” the central defender said.
Erimuya, who plays his club football for Kayseri in the Turkish top flight, was one of the few bright sparks of the Olympics-bound Dream Team VI in South Korea. He put on a calm and assured performance and got a beauty of a goal in Nigeria’s last match in the 3-1 win against Honduras. Feelers from the team reveal that he is one of the few players who are certain to be in the squad for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics which hold in August.
On the prospects of more Europe-based players being invited to the team by Coach Samson Siasia, Erimuya welcomed the idea. “The coaches have watched the team closely and will always try to improve their squad. Every player knows it’s all down to competition for places, and we embrace such challenges,” he said
Erimuya was the captain of the grassroots team BJ Foundation FC of Benin City that took the Federation Cup by storm last year, reaching the last 8 of the competition, while eliminating Premier League side, Heartland of Owerri in the second round of the competition.
