Former Federation Cup champions Akwa United won for the first time on the road this season in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) by defeating Kano Pillars 1-0 at the Sani Abacha Stadium on Sunday.
Christian Pyagbara combined with Alhassan Ibrahim to score for Akwa United after 19 minutes and that turned out to be the only goal of a keenly-contested match.
It was the first time that Akwa United would win in Kano after eight attempts.
The win ensures that Akwa United are now in fifth place and on 26 points, seven behind league leaders MFM FC.
MFM produced a blitz of a performance in the first half to overrun El-Kanemi Warriors 3-0 in the top-of-the-table clash. Austine Ogunye, Sikiru Olatunbosun and Stephen Odey scored for MFM.
Fidelis Ilechukwu’s men returned to winning ways after their humiliating 0-4 loss at Nasarawa United last weekend.
The Lagos club are now top of the pile with 33 points with Plateau United and El-Kanemi dropping to second and third positions respectively.
Two-time African champions Enyimba missed the chance to stay within touching distance of the pacesetters following their 1-2 defeat at Katsina United.
The Peoples Elephant took the lead through Chinedu Ohanachom on 20 minutes before Obinna Eleje’s goal cancelled the lead in added time of first half.
Chinedu Udechukwu scored the winner for Katsina United with seven minutes to time after good work from Destiny Ashadi.
Chukwudi Samuel, Abubakar Lawal and Hassan Hussein scored for Wikki Tourists as they saw off Gombe United in the northeast derby. Sadiq Shuaibu’s goal for the Scorpions did not affect the outcome at a packed Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi.
Rivers United eased to a 1-0 win over Abia Warriors after Emeka Ogbugh smashed a spot kick fiercely on 32 minutes.
ABS left it late at the Kwara State Stadium to defeat a plucky Nasarawa United team 1-0. Centre-back Ernest Governor scored the winner from Samuel Oyedeji's assist.
Niger Tornadoes made 3SC work for the full points in Ibadan before succumbing to a 1-2 defeat. Sunday Faleye opened scoring for 3SC on 36 minutes before Wilfred Ammeh levelled matters with 14 minutes to time.
Emmanuel Assiri netted the winner for 3SC with nine minutes to play as the Ibadan club now occupy 13th with 22 points, one above the drop zone.
Sunshine Stars, who are in talks with former Nigeria head coach Austin Eguavoen to manage their team, needed a first half strike from Thomas Adeshina to secure a 1-0 win over Remo Stars in the southwest derby. Both clubs are in the bottom-four.
Only one game failed to produce goals. Lobi Stars and FC Ifeanyiubah played out a 0-0 draw at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi. © supersport.com
