Enugu Rangers General Manager, Christian Chukwu, has expressed disappointment over the inability of Rangers to progress to the group stage of this year’s CAF Champions League following their slim win at the Cathedral over Zamalek on Sunday.
Chukwu, who is recuperating in one of the private hospitals in the Coal City in an exclusive interview with Daily Sportslamented the inability of his boys to score many goals that would have enabled them to progress.
According to him, he had thought that Rangers should have wiped the tears in the eyes of Nigerians who were shocked with Rivers United ouster after suffering a 4-0 defeat in the hands of the Sudanese in Omdurman despite their 3-0 advantage in the first leg in Port Harcourt a week ago.
“It is really disappointing that Rangers couldn’t progress to the next stage of the competition due to our slim victory,” Chukwu lamented.
“We won 2-1 but that is not enough. We had thought that we will be able to put smiles on the face of Nigerian after Rivers were dumped out of the competition on Saturday. We had thought that we would avenge their defeat but unfortunately we were unable to score enough goals to see us through.
“It is most unfortunate but that is football for you. Sometimes it doesn’t go the way you want it,” Chukwu said.
It is recalled that Rangers and Rivers United were the country’s representatives in this year’s CAF Champions League and both have crashed out of the money spinning continental club competition.
Earlier, the two Nigerian flag bearers, FC Ifeanyi Ubah and Wikki Tourist of Bauchi were eliminated in the preliminary rounds leaving the country without any team in both continental club competitions. This leaves a question mark on the standard of the Nigerian League.
